Bonspiels at Fairbanks Curling Club

Rookie Spiel

Every year the Fairbanks Curling Club hosts a Rookie Spiel geared towards giving more experience to new curlers by pairing teams of two expereicned curlers with two new curlers. The spiel always happens the weekend after thanksgiving and is a great time. There is always a new theme and costums are encouraged.

Denali State Bank Cash Spiel

One of the Fairbanks Curling Clubs oldest bonspiels the Denali State Bank Cash spiel was previously the "Yukon Title" for many years running. Recently Denali State Bank has generously taken over the sponsorship of this event and provided some of the cash prizes that go to our winnings curlers. This is a competitive event with money on the line and always proves to be a good time to watch great curling.

Retro Spiel

Starting in 2018 The Fairbanks Curling Club partnered with Ester Fire Department and we take over their outdoor ice skating rink for a weekend of fun curling on natural ice outdoors. This event is always a blast, weather permitting of course.

International Bonspiel

A great long history of this bonspiel exists at the fairbanks curling club. Going on 88th year of this international, we draw curlers from around the country and Canada to compete in a 4-event bracket with an ultimate showdown for Bonspiel Champion between the A bracket winners and the B bracket winners who wrap around. This event is packed with teams and around the clock curling was part of its history. Great food, Great friends, Great Curling always marks then end of our season as we turn off the ice after the first wekend in April at the conclusion of our international bonspiel.

Shamrock Doubles Spiel

The Shamrock Doubles Spiel happens yearly at the Fairbanks Curling Club. This spiel is our only doubles spiel of the year and is for cash and raffle prizes. Lucky Leon the Leprachaun gets up to no good every year around St. Patty's day and he stashes coins to his pot of gold around the club. Earn yours by being lucky enough to have certain situations happen during your games and get a raffle ticket.

Furthest North 5 & Under Qualifier Bonspiel

The Fairbanks Curling Club started hosting this annual 5 & Under National qualifier in 2023! We have thoroughly enjoyed hosting teams from around the country and are thilled to provide Alaskan curlers a chance to compete at a National-style event.

You heard it, 5 & Under; but we don't mean under 5 years old! This bonspiel is for teams who want to compete for a chance to qualify for the 5 & Under National Championships, a 'USA Curling' sponsored event for curlers who have 5 or less years of curling experience.

We hope to keep hosting this event into the future in order to promote 5U curling in Fairbanks and Alaska as a whole, as well as attract out-of-town teams to curl in the Last Frontier!

The aniticipated 2026 Furthest North 5 & Under Bonspiel is scheduled to be January 15-18, 2026! We have extended this spiel to Thur-Sun to spread out games and give travelling teams opportunities to explore Alaska between matches. Anticipated cost: $500/team

Registration cost includes:

5-game guarantee, several meals, discounted merch, and other potential extras!

We will be live-streaming games on our FCC Youtube Channel! Links will be shared before the event.

Furthest North 5 & Under Bonspiel Format:

  • 18 team limit - may fill up fast!
  • 3 pools of 6 teams
  • Timed games (30 min of 'Thinking Time' for each team)
  • 'No Tick Rule' in effect
  • LSD shots before each game - to determine hammer and count towards DSC scores (tiebreakers in pool play)
  • No broomhead restrictions ("legal" broom head covers are mandatory at National Championship events)
  • Round Robin play within each pool (5 pool play games per team) and pools determined by peer seeding process
  • Top 2 teams from each pool move onto the playoffs. Top 2 teams with best records will have a BYE into the semifinals. Quarterfinals are 3rd seed vs 6th seed overall, and 4th seed vs 5th seed overall. Winner of 3v6 plays the #1 seed in Semifianl #1, and the winner of 4v5 plays the #2 seed in Semifinal #2

Anticipated Schedule:

Thursday:

Morning: All-team meeting + brunch

Afternoon: Practice sessions (11am-4pm timeframe). Possibility of one game per team Thur afternoon - schedule depending.

Evening: Regular Fairbanks CC leagues will run as planned (5:30-9:30pm). Free to watch. Bar will be open! Possible 5U social event and/or other planned activities.

Friday: 

All day: Round robin games. 2 games per team.

Evening: Regular Fairbanks CC leagues will run as planned (5:30-9:30pm).

Dinner Fundraiser for the FCC Junior Curler Program

Saturday:

All day: Round robin games. 2 games per team.

Evening: Alaskan Potluck dinner (Free for curlers!)

Sunday:

Morning: Quarterfinals

Afternoon: Semifinals and Finals (finals may start as late as 6pm -this is TBD)

The winner of the Furthest North 5U earn a spot at the 5 & Under National Championships that will be held in April/May of 2026! Host site for 2026 Nationals is TBD.

Alaska Challenge Cup

The Alaska Challenge cup is a new event starting in 2025 that has teams playing down in local clubs throughout Alaska. Winnings teams play each other at this event, earning points for their respective home clubs. The club that accumulates the most points wins!

Margarita Spiel

Each year we gather after Christmas day to work off some of the lounging around and food we took in over the holidays. This is a great short event with some margaritas and we mix people up into teams for a one day fun spiel.

Glo Spiel

Get out your neon cloths because this spiel is all about glowing and black lights. The club brings out black lights to do glow curling during this event each year and it's bound to be a blast.

Army / AirForce Spiel

This is our yearly showdown for the Army and Air Force. Let's see who comes out on top as teams that register declare which side they are curling for!
