Fairbanks Curling Club Policies

Welcome to the Fairbanks Curling Club (FCC). To ensure a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for everyone, FCC has updated its operational guidelines. The following policies apply to all members and guests, both on and off the ice. Compliance with these policies helps maintain the spirit of curling, protects the historic facility, and preserves the quality of club ice.

August 2026 Updated club policies for members and guests.
No pay, no play Membership fees must be paid in full before anyone is added to a team.
$20 sub fee Non-member substitutes are billed $20 per league match, due the same day.
Zero tolerance Harassment or discrimination of any kind is not allowed.
Ages 11 and under Children cannot be left unsupervised anywhere in the club.

Membership and fees

No pay, no play

Membership fees must be paid in full before an individual can be added to a team. Unpaid individuals will not be able to be registered on a team until their membership dues have been paid.

Leagues that require an additional participation fee (Competitive Doubles, Competitive League, and Dinner League) will be invoiced after league play has commenced.

Sub fees

The club recognizes the need for substitutes. For non-member substitutions, a $20 sub-fee will be billed per league match substitution, to the substitute. Payment can be made at the club’s bar and should be submitted the same day the substitution occurs.

The team’s skip is responsible for ensuring non-member subs understand the sub-fee policy and remit payment on time.

Safety

Safe Sport

The Fairbanks Curling Club is dedicated to protecting youth athletes from any form of sexual, verbal, or physical abuse. This policy requires mandatory training for board members, coaches, instructors, and adults coordinating youth activities or transportation.

Zero tolerance

In alignment with USA Curling standards, the club has a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination of any kind.

Supervision of minors

Children 11 years of age and under cannot be left unsupervised in the club. Parents and guardians must ensure their child is being supervised before going onto the ice. If problems arise, parents may be asked to leave game play and attend to the issue, up to and including removing their child from the club.

Alcohol

Alcohol is not permitted in the downstairs area of the club at any time. Alcoholic beverages sourced from outside of the club are not permitted.

Accidents, on or off the ice

If you, or someone on the ice with you, falls and is injured, help them seek medical assistance if and as appropriate. After the injured person has been attended to, an Accident Form must be filled out. This form is located on the bulletin board outside of the downstairs office and beside the first aid kit. Completed forms should be handed to a bartender, League Manager, or Board member.

Ice packets can be found in the freezer next to the soda vending machine downstairs. A first aid kit and arm splints are located in the hallway outside of the kitchen. If first responders are called, a Board Member or League Manager should be notified as soon as possible. Contact information can be found on the main bulletin board where leagues are posted.

Liability forms

Every member and guest must fill out a liability form before entering the ice rink. Liability forms are available online via the QR code posted in the downstairs area of the club. Paper copies can be found on the bulletin board outside of the office downstairs. Completed forms can be placed in the mailbox located next to the merchandise display case downstairs.

Guests and children

Our members and their families are welcome in all areas of the club. Curlers and visitors under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian while upstairs, no exceptions. Children aged 11 and under may not be left unsupervised in the club.

Trophy Room bar

The Trophy Room is a licensed bar. Guests and members must be 21 or older to be upstairs when the bar is open, or with a parent or legal guardian in accordance with Alaska Statutes. The bar is open on league nights and special occasions. Members and guests are encouraged to help keep the club tidy. Busing your own table and disposing of trash is expected.

To reserve the Trophy Room for large or small events, club members and community members should contact the club’s Rental Coordinator, Meagan Jansen, at meagan@curlfairbanks.org.

Ice usage

As a member, you are welcome to enter the club and practice on the ice at your leisure. Scheduled events such as bonspiels, public and private events, leagues, rentals, and learn-to-curls will be granted ice priority. Members are encouraged to showcase the history of the club and the spirit of curling to friends and family. Member-planned events, such as social gatherings or large learn-to-curls of four or more people, should be scheduled with the club’s rental coordinator. As a reminder, all members and guests are required to sign a release waiver prior to stepping onto the ice.

When vacating the building, please verify the lights are turned off and the exterior door latches closed and locked.

Equipment

Clean footwear is required when stepping onto the ice. No outside shoes should be worn on the ice. Curling shoes and grippers are mandatory while on the ice. Grippers are available and located near the entrance to Sheet #1. Please take time to clean your broom heads prior to heading out onto the ice. The club provides brooms that may be used, but please do not take these brooms home or keep them in your locker.

Volunteering

The Fairbanks Curling Club and its legacy was built by our generous volunteers. To this day, the organization continues to thrive because of these efforts. Throughout the year, there are several events that depend on volunteerism. We encourage volunteer contributions including, but not limited to, bonspiel and event planning and organizing, learn-to-curls, ice maintenance and preparation, junior and youth fundraisers, club facilities maintenance, open house events, and kitchen operations.

In addition, there are simple tasks that all members can perform to help keep the club clean. For example, after you’re done with your game on the ice, dispose of any used water cups, bottles, and candy wrappers, and stow your equipment properly. After eating or drinking upstairs, return your glasses to the bar and dispose of your trash. If you have young children using the play area downstairs, please help them store toys and entertainment items before leaving the club.

On-ice etiquette

The Fairbanks Curling Club requires all members to follow these curling etiquette protocols.

  1. Be prepared to step on the ice at the scheduled start time. If you are unable to make a game, advise your skip ahead of time and arrange for a substitute.
  2. If your team does not have at least 2 members from the registered roster, the match is forfeited. If you know your team will not be able to attend a scheduled match, notify your opponents as soon as possible.
  3. Skips are encouraged to be familiar with curling etiquette and set an example for their teams. This includes rules, pace of play, on-ice safety, timeliness, and payment of dues.
  4. Begin the match with a handshake from all curlers and the customary greeting of “Good Curling.”
  5. Curling is a sport of personal integrity. It is on you and your team to call out your own errors, including burned and hogged rocks.
  6. Congratulate good shots by your team and the opposing team. Do not cheer for a missed shot even if your team ends up scoring.
  7. Keep knees, rear-ends, and hands off the ice. It only takes a few seconds for your body parts to melt the ice and potentially affect the travel path of a stone.
  8. Keep your broom, shoes, and grippers clean to minimize picks (debris on the ice).
  9. Clean shoe policy: all participants must wear clean sneakers with rubberized soles that have not been worn outside.
  10. Slow curling is bad etiquette. Maintain the pace of play. As soon as the opposing team’s rock has crossed the near hog line, your team should set up the next rock and position into the hack. Standard FCC curling league games are 8 ends. All leagues are allotted a 2-hour time slot with the goal of completing 8 ends in that time. If your team intends on curling fewer than 8 ends, communicate that to your opponents.
  11. Only skips and thirds stand behind the house. They should remain still and keep brooms off the ice while the opposing team is preparing to deliver a rock.
  12. If your team is not delivering the rock, stand along the sidelines between the hog lines.
  13. Be ready to sweep your teammate’s rock as soon as it is released.
  14. When each end is over, all players except for thirds remain outside the rings until the thirds have agreed on a score.
  15. As each night has multiple leagues scheduled, if you have not completed your game 15 minutes before the next league is scheduled to begin, do not start another end. If the game is tied, the winner can be determined by a lag or last-shot draw.
  16. Upon match completion, thank each of the opposing players for the game with a handshake and a customary “Good Curling.” The winning team is responsible for cleaning the sheet of ice.

Questions are welcome

Thank you for taking the time to review our club policies. You are always welcome to contact the Board of Directors at Board@curlfairbanks.org if you have any questions or concerns. The bartender and your league manager are also available to provide guidance and answer questions.

Thank you for your continued support of the Fairbanks Curling Club.
